Once upon a time, trappers, trekkers, and even soldiers did not carry sleeping bags. They carried rolls of blankets. Until not long ago, wool was the best blanket material. Then, still a few decades ago, nylon fabrics emerged. During the Vietnam War, a new blanket emerged – the poncho liner. An ultra-lightweight blanket serving as a warm liner for a poncho with rain protection.

In Australian slang, "swagman" means a travelling worker. Something like an American cowboy or trapper, occasionally looking for work on the Frontier. The difference was that the Australian swagman travelled on foot and carried all his belongings in a roll.
