How to choose the right secondary weapon for airsoft

A secondary or back-up weapon may seem pointless. However, it is an important helper for regular airsoft players. We will explain why you need it and advise you on which one to choose.

Why is having just one weapon not enough?

You must have spent a lot of time choosing your primary weapon and are wondering why go through it all over again. There are several reasons. If you are not going to an airsoft event for the first time, you probably know that a lot of unexpected (un)pleasant surprises can occur during the game. For example, one may be a glitch on your primary weapon. If your weapon stops working and you don’t have a backup, you’re done for. In some games, even having your primary weapon shot will knock you out - but only if you can’t reach your secondary weapon.

Another reason most airsoft players own multiple guns is the fact that once you’ve spent your primary weapon’s magazine, you won’t need to reload during a firefight, but simply fire another weapon, which is often faster and more effective. Likewise, it is advisable to change the weapon in a close-quarters battle (CQB), which many powerful primary weapons cannot participate in due to the obvious risk.

You can’t be without a secondary weapon if you are performing a military simulation or a real unit, especially for aesthetic reasons, or if you are a sniper. Sniper weapons are also not suitable for CQB.

How to choose a secondary weapon?

Secondary weapons are usually chosen from three categories: pistols, revolvers, or submachine guns. Manual pistols are relatively inexpensive, so they are suitable for beginners. The disadvantage is the low cadence of fire, so it is more suitable for training than for action. AEP electric guns may be either battery powered or rechargeable. We do not recommend the classic battery powered guns as they have a very weak performance. Rechargeable battery electric pistols are a good option as a secondary weapon, and there are also fully automatic models.

Gas pistols are more expensive, but they realistically imitate handguns. They mostly have blowback and realistic disassembly. They require more maintenance and are sensitive to temperature, you need to carry a gas tank with you and ideally need temperatures of +10 degrees and above, so they are not suitable for winter.

Revolvers are another popular option. Manual revolvers are rarely seen in the game, but gas revolvers are a common choice. They are similar to gas pistols, but mainly differ in the size of the magazine, which may often be more than half the size. Being shot with these revolvers hurts the opponent, and the charging and their appearance are also realistic.

More compact versions of submachine guns can also serve as a secondary weapon. Manual submachine guns serve more as decoration, while the gas version looks very realistic. On the other hand, they are relatively expensive and are more suitable for more experienced players. Electric submachine guns are a good choice. They mostly offer a decent price/performance ratio, there is a wide range to choose from, they are easy to upgrade, and they can be equipped with many tactical accessories that increase their functionality and attractiveness.
